2:00 am:
Jack layed streched out on the worn sofa, arms behind his head, eyes narrowed lazily. Being so late, early really, there were not many people in the common room, only a few couples here and there in the corners. Not that he minded, Jack was never one for crowds. Glancing around boredly, he let his mind wander. This place seemed like a well enough area to start off a persons life in. Plently of open land, fresh air, friendly people -well, for the most part. And horses. Can't forget them. Those marvelous, majestic beasts. As well as the still wld ones, some who would never bow there head to a human's reign. There you go again Jake Rae. Can't keep your mind off those darned creatures.
Jack chuckled softly under is breath and reached his hand out the rub the head of the small black dog wha laid beside the couch. "I think we might settle here, eh Gama?" he talked softly, so only the dog could hear. "Good a place as any." The dog only lifted her head sleepily and began to lick his hand.
He brought his gaze back up to the ceiling and slowly traced the patterns on it with his eyes. On the day he turned 19 he had packed up his things, called his dog, and set off in the old pickup to nowhere. He and Gama had been drifting for about two months, looking for a place to start out.
Jack sighed contently, nestling further into the sagging couch. It was a good feeling to have finally decided to stay. He looked back down to the dog beside him and smiled faintly. "Hey dog," An ear lifted slightly but otherwise it did not acknowledge him. He whistled quietly but sharply and finally the labrador lifted its ead and glared at him irritatedly. He laughed and pattedhis chest, at which it instantly became more alert. Releasing a happy yip it jumped onto the couch and nestled itself between the sofa back and his body, front paws on his chest and head on his shoulder, sighing happily. He stroked the dog's head tenderly, "I spoil you, don't I, girl."
He looked back once more to the ceiling and let time slowly pass, thinking of the future and listening to the soft breathing of a contented dog in his ear.
