Dakota looked into the eyes of the horses as she slowly passed the stalls. They were unique looking horses, many of different breeds and colors and while one could be a barrel horse, the next would be a halter champion. This place was a melting pot of all sorts, it was a unique place for Dakota to be. Her pale eyes had strayed down to the floor, when she caught sight of a young woman cleaning up the stalls. The heap of stray, hay, and manure seemed to be growing in size with each toss of the rake. "Hey, I'm Dakota." She kindly greeted, being quick to make friends with the people she met some always a better idea than being rude and fussy. Dakota had seem some serious bee-yotchs pass through the stables she worked at, a few of them making her hold the tack, making her groom and feed their horse, when they should have been doing it themselves. Of course, they wouldn't dare do all the nasty, sweaty, dirty work. They just wanted the glamour of the show ring. Clawing her way up the social status list was not something she'd imagine to do, stepping on people for her own personal gain also seemed out of her character.
A wind chill sent a shiver up and down her spine, telling her to slip her jacket back on. "Well, I'm boarding here and staying in the house over there, I've got a racing filly I'm keeping here. Her name's Scream Queen, and I outta warn you she lives up to her name." She paused, a warm smile climbed up on her face. "Red hired me to work the racehorses."

{He he *grins evilly*} Tracy paused and set the fork aside. "Well thanks for the warning." She laughed. Dakota was nice and friendly, Tracy was pleased. She wasn't the total stuck up Tracy had envisioned her. "Well if you didn't know I'm your roommate, I've been with Red for 5 years and do mainly rodeo. I ride the barrel racers and penners. Also a stable hand. I.e. I get to have all the fun with the glamorous side of competing!" She gestured sarcastically to the muck behind her.

She leaned against a stall door, she had felt tired all day but it seemed that even her late breakfast couldn't get her energy back up. "Rodeo? Wow, I bet that keeps you busy!" She liked this girl, she was sure she would be a pleasant roommate. Brushing her fingers through her smoothed out hair, Dakota's eyes drifted off over to the tack room, she wondered if she could take Scream Queen for a breeze on the track. She needed to loosen up her muscles a bit. "Hey, do you think Red would mind if I took Scream Queen to breeze on the track?" Dusting some horsehair from her hand from stroking the neck of a colt she had met on her way to the barn.
Her long hair tumbled down her shoulders, but she quickly tied it up in a hair tie she had removed from her pocket. If she planned on galloping her horse, it was always advised to keep your hair from your eyes. The last thing you wanted was to be blinded on the race track, Dakota had learn that the hard way.

Dakota nodded, she hoped she would be able to canter Scream Queen a bit to get her muscles working again. She needed it, although Dakota knew she ought to browse for races to enter Queen in, she figured she'd wait until she settled. "Sure! I'm certain Scream Queen will like having a running buddy." She carefully slid out the barn door and into the large and spacious tack room. Scream Queen's exercise bridle and saddle had been cleaned up and placed near the door. She couldn't help but wonder who cleaned the tack for her, she for sure could not recall doing it herself. Luckily, Scream Queen had not rolled in her stall and was still clean from her grooming session earlier in the morning. This way, Scream Queen's fiery chestnut, almost blood colored coat still had it's shine. A little Show Sheen, goes a long way.
Slipping the bridle on, she adjusted the straps and checked to see that the saddle was suited to Dakota's needs. The stirrups were still that of a racing saddle, but a bit thicker. "Good girl." She soothed, and it didn't strike her until that moment that she didn't even introduce herself to her roommate. "Oh, I'm Dakota by the way. This, here, is Scream Queen." She was proud of her filly, a two year old who knew how to kill on the racetrack and still be humble and subtle. At least, most of the time.

"She's certainly something." Tracy mused, she was a pretty young mare. A definite racer type. Just up Red's alley, she could see why Red took a liking to the chestnut. She wasn't into racing herself but she knew Scream Queen was built for racing. Though she had stiff competition. She led out Spirit of the Sea, the huge bay stallion was quite a sight. His mahogany coat had a sheen unmatched. His big brown eyes alert and ready. Muscles rippled under his skin. He had a long and lean body. Powerful quarters and a beautiful arched neck. He was Red's favorite, the top 3 year old in the country and he looked every inch of it. The stallion spotted Scream Queen and eyed her for a moment. Then he looked away, his mind was focused one one thing only. Racing.

The chestnut jerked up her head, "If anything, she's a handful." Dakota said a small, and faint laugh. Dakota knew Scream Queen did fine with other horses, of course if she saw another on the track she'd try and pass him but Dakota would not let Scream Queen do that. Her muscles were not prepared for it, she needed to breeze a few laps and allow her to cool down properly before doing anything of the sort. "Her front right leg is being a little stiff, nothing too big to stress over but the vet says I should watch and see if it gets any better, or worse." Softly rubbing the filly's leg, she followed Tracy and her handsome horse out into the sunshine, she enjoyed feeling the mid-noon glow against her cheek. Jumping up into the stirrups, she tossed off her jacket as it was starting to become more of an annoyance than a help. Scream Queen was favoring the rest of her legs, although she but weight on the leg Dakota was watching. Dakota shook her head, perhaps she had ridden her too hard the day they won by five or so lengths, Scream Queen knew how to take a harsh run but her right hind leg started to become more and more stiff. Dakota knew she would hate to retire the filly so young, but it was always out there in the blue. As she got her walking around, she knew all she needed to do was get her working lighter workouts, less galloping and more time working the leg. After some massages and medicines, Scream Queen would be ready to race in a few weeks. Dakota needed the purse money, and in order to obtain it Scream Queen needed to be in top form, and today she was a bit far from that.

Dakota took in the horse's strong, but elegant beauty and grace. She knew from the moment Tracy suggested she take him for a ride, it would be a challenge but nothing else thrilled her more. The old jockey had a crash, in a wheelchair for life. Well what do you say, Dakota had no fear of hurting herself. She had done it many times before, a violent fall of an horse she once raced left her in the hospital for longer than she ever wanted to. She ran her finger up the scar that remained on her lower arm, a broken bone that had slowly healed. Death could happen, but she would die doing what she loved. Danger, was a thirst she had to quench and racing was the only way she could quench such a large thirst. "I'd love to race him around the track! Would you mind, walking Scream Queen around? I really think she needs to work out that leg muscle." As she jumped off her filly, she checked the saddle for any folds and leaned against her chestnut beauty. Scream Queen went on to snort, looking at her owner who gave her a small kiss on the forehead.
Dakota hoped she would prove good when Red watched her race. She had once been put on some crazed horses, but had managed to place each time with those horses. Her hunger for winning was a powerful, driving force in her that would never allow her to take second place. Never. She stroked Spirit's side, he was such a handsome creature.

{Actual Seabiscuit Icon!} Spirit saw Tracy walking away with the mare. He was confused, all of a sudden the young woman Dakota mounted him. He sidestepped a little, a little taken aback by it all. She got firm in the saddle and then urged him on. He began to trot, unsure. He played with the bit. 'Should he spook or buck her off?' Spirit only like Red, John (his old jockey) and Tracy riding him. That and he really only tolerated John and Tracy. As they crossed over the ground a thought came to him. He wanted to test the new rider. Really test her. He snorted as he snaked his head, lurching down.

Dakota handed over Scream Queen's reins over to Tracy, and gladly jumped up on the large colt's back. She enjoyed riding younger horses, but she also enjoyed riding the four and five year olds before they retired to stud or brood. Sliding her feet into the stirrups, she lifted herself up and gripped the reins. She could feel him full against her grip for the reins, his elegant hand was sinking lower and lower. Dakota knew just the way to handle such a horse, she'd done it before. "Not so fast. I do not think so." She gave a bit of a warning tone, grabbing more rein and jerking against his head. She would only give him his head back as soon as his behavior took a better turn. She jerked at the bit, and then carefully set the reins back down and released the pressure on the bit. Dakota prepared to make it clear she would happily apply more pressure to his mouth if he made her do so.
Dakota kicked him into a slow canter, and she pulled lightly against the bit to prevent him from breaking into a rushed gallop.

Spirit snorted. The colt was annoyed that the his rider was controlling his head. He hated when people did that. He tried to swing his head to the side but she was holding onto the reins to firmly for that. 'Very well' he thought, 'She wants to play. Then let's play.' He stopped, arching his back like a cat and pulling his head down.

Keeping her seat, she could feel Spirit fight against her hold. "Come on boy." She tried to keep her words soothing, softly stroking his neck as he suddenly halted. She released her grip on the reins, letting them softly drop to his withers. Still keeping her hands on the reins, she was sure not to let him think she had given control back over to him. This was a fight, she had to win. She then went on to ask for a slow walk out of him, maybe if she was pleased she'd go on and let him run. The cool morning air slowly started to turn into the afternoon, the sun had a thin coat of clouds protecting it from the world. Dakota's pale, golden hair tossed around in the breeze as if she were moving much faster. Red sure had put her on the hardest horse she'd ever ridden, but she knew if she could get the horse to agree with her on some level they'd be getting somewhere.
She was starting to wish she hadn't thrown down her jacket, but it was too late to ask for it right now. Her mind was focused on this horse.

The colt grew more flustered and irritated as Dakota refuse to give in. He began to rock his head back and forth and tugged at the reins, hoping they'd slip from her hand. He snorted as his silky coat was quickly being covered in sweat. He bucked in anger, trying to unseat her.

What a terd. Dakota thought, of course she wasn't going to give in! She never did, and she was always told not to. That's what this horse wanted, to give up. As a jockey, her leg muscles were keen and strong, and as he bucked out she gripped her legs around him, at least managing to keep herself in the stirrups. "Calm yourself down, being a gentlemen wouldn't hurt." Scream Queen tossed up her head as they trotted past, and with a few tosses of her head she was silent and content. Grabbing the reins once more, she released all pressure from her legs and from the reins. Nothing contained the horse, but she knew that she would have to let some trust be bought back. Scream Queen was just like this her first race, she even threw her during the race, but being at the bottom of the pack no hooves were there to crush her.
Her hair messed with the wind as it tumbled around. "Good boy, nice and smooth. You're a handsome boy you know, I bet you're a hit at the barn, no? I think we can understand each other."
