Spirit could hear the girl whispering sweet nothings in his ears, he didn't buy it. His gait became sloppy and sluggish. He wanted to make sure she didn't enjoy this ride. All of sudden as they were halfway up the track he sniffed something. Something familiar, Red...

She didn't tolerate him slowing down, and no matter what action he took she would always climb back up wards in the saddle and push forward. It's she was trained to do and she could never, not ever let this horse get the best out of her. She had her grip of the reins a bit looser than usually, her grip with her legs began tighter and she squeezed with her calves. Her riding boots lightly tapped his sides, and she jerked his head away from whatever he happened to be sniffing at. She displayed no out wards expression that showed the frustration brewing inside, and for sure she would not let Red see her like that. Dakota was going to stick to her guns, and they had plenty of bullets to last her. The last thing she would do was walk up to Red and back down from such an offer because one horse gave her troubles, this offer was far too great to decline because of one riot of a colt. If Dakota owned such a colt, she would usually arrange for him to be gelded. It didn't matter if she couldn't breed him a mare, as long as his performance was not hindered by the attractive fillies she'd be happy.
Dakota Winters was the type who held her composure in all situations, no matter what. Being the only female who ran in some races did not stop her, from racing like one of the boys. Dakota was always a little tougher than the rest, her girly side still clung to her like a loose tooth that she couldn't shake. Although she had to admit, riding Scream Queen this year and not another horse made her feel somewhat out of her element. Spirit was such a riot, she could feel his muscles tense and release. She could sense that his mind was brewing such ways to unseat her, but she could only give him his head for so long. She thought, she would first get to know him and then, alert him that she was the dominant being here. Before he left, her father always told the racehorses that acted up they'd be "turned into a stick a glue" and it always worked just like magic. It made her laugh, the fact the horses always tossed their heads in agreement to obeying. She even tried it on Scream Queen, the very day she refused to enter the starting gates. "Still can't believe I forgot my jacket, what a stupid idiot I am." She murmured to herself, and asked for just a slow walk. A walk, that's all she asked of this horse. If he failed to deliver, she'd go on to tap him with both the riding crop and her boots. A small squeeze with her calves would convince him to move forward. She knew she would never, perhaps, be as good as the old jockey was with Spirit but she prayed this colt would at least accept the way she rode him. They needed to meet, somewhere in the middle.

Dakota could feel some of Spirit's muscles ease, she knew he still wished to fight but she also felt his will to pull against her fade away. She stroked him on the neck, giving him a soft rub to let him know she was content with his performance today. Would he keep a steady canter with her riding? She only hoped, and she leaned her body forward, slowly squeezing with her calves and as she felt his pace quicken she lifted herself slowly in the saddle. The proper jockey position, and it felt nice riding like this again. Scream Queen tossed up her head from time to time, she had no objection to a ride out but a small pain in her leg annoyed her. Dakota knew one thing, Red would have to take a look at it and get something for her sore leg. She knew it couldn't be something serious like a break, Scream Queen had been in the trailer and stall all day. She pondered, but kept her focus on riding this colt.
"Handsome colt you have here, he's a handful." She said with a smile.

Looking back at Spirit, she could tell she had managed to get somewhere with the colt. Tossing her long, curly blonde hair from her eyes she felt a warm breeze brush against her back. The morning broke into the noon, Dakota always loved riding when the sun had just woken up and the air was clear and clean. She glanced back over to Tracy and Scream Queen, who were happily standing and enjoying the nice weather for themselves. Dakota than looked back at Red, thankful she had gotten his approval and that he liked the way she rode. "I love a good challenge, and he was that and then some. " Dakota gave a quick smile, before stroking Spirit's nose softly once more. She loved how horses had such silky, almost velvet smooth horses that felt warm as they pressed against your cheek.

Spirit tossed his head playfully and let out a whinny to the sky. The sun beat down on his back pleasantly. He enjoyed being out in the open air. He also enjoyed Dakota stroking him. His brown and white streaked muzzle nuzzled her affectionately whilst he sniffed out her pockets for treats.

She relaxed her shoulders and dismounted the colt, he seemed content and that made her feel a bit better about the ride. She felt hot breath brush against the pocket of her jeans. "Alright, Alright you got me." She said and plucked a treat from her pocket. Laying her hand out flat, Dakota offered the treat to the colt. It was a special peppermint treat that also improved the condition of the horse's teeth and hooves. It was some nutrient treat she gave Scream Queen all the time and she was doing just fine. She felt a burst of wind send her hair flying up into the sky, she reached up and tried to smoothe it back down but the breeze refused to give in. "I've always hated the wind. So, what would you like me to do next?"

Dakota nodded in agreement, and reached for the colt's leather reins. Scream Queen had her nose pressed against Tracy's pocket but shot her head up as soon as she saw no treats lurking inside her pockets. "Silly girl, she doesn't have any treats. I'll put the two horses up, and he mentioned something about paperwork I have to fill out, but I'll help you feed the horses first." She smiled in a nonchalant manner, and gracefully walked back to the large, spacious barn. She tied Scream Queen up to the washbin to the right, and Spirit to the washbin on the left. Removing his saddle from his sweaty back, she reached for the saddle pad and placed them on his rack. There was a special place for the bridle as well, and as she was supposed to Dakota put his bridle in the correct place. Slipping his halter around his face, a few brush strokes later she had him walking down to his stall with a small run. He seemed glad to receive his ration for the day, back in his stall again. As she repeated those steps for Scream Queen, she picked up the sore foot and found the cause. A small rock had gotten stuck in her hoof, the filly sighed with relief to have no more pain in that hoof. "You've been here a day, and your stall looks awful, Queenie." She joked with the filly, whose head poked out of the washbin. Dakota drug a bucket close to the stall door and picked up piles of urine and manure with a pitchfork. Scream Queen didn't need any more bedding, so she just evened out the clean areas until the stall seemed satisfactory.
Scream Queen snorted and returned to her stall. Each horse had their own golden name plate, she ran her fingers over Scream Queen's name plate. She thought of all the times they had together, winning the races and celebrating with a small hack in the woods. She loved her filly, she knew she'd make a lovely hunter jumper when she retired from the track. Dakota would earn extra cash that way. Flipping her phone open, Tracy had seemingly gotten to work on the other stalls. She saw the time, and she knew she had several hours until it was time to each dinner.

Tracy's frantic tone of voice caught Dakota off guard like a large wave a surfer did not anticipate. She fumbled with Scream Queen's lead rope and finally just tossed it over the filly's stall door. Tossing up hear head, she sensed the blood rushing through Dakota. "Right, I'll be back!" She rushed up to the main building, a few riders huddled around the television watching some kind of sporting game, conversing with one another about the teams. Dakota never cared for that kind of sport, horse racing was more of her field. Not wanting to appear frantic, she moved forward and tapped one of the other riders on the shoulder. It was a female, a tall and slender one at that. Her hair fell well beyond her shoulders, a cascade of red dripping down her back. "Hello, may I help you ma'am?" Dakota took a moment to steady herself, "Red's presence has been requested in the barn by my roommate, it's urgent." The young woman pointed to an office, the door was cracked but she could tell by the light on that someone was in the room. As the woman returned to her talking, Dakota slowly walked to the door, knocking on the window and slightly pushing the door open. "Tracy.....she told me to get you. Um, um, I think something may be going on in the barn. She's in the mare barn or something of that kind."

She would have guessed it was the mare, Tracy had mentioned her once or twice before before Dakota dismounted Scream Queen. She nodded and followed him out the office. The other riders must have known the reason, they whispered and talked amoungst themselves before their fascination faded and they were forced to get back to their business.
